Kevin Box  “Folding Planes”  50” x 29” x 30”  $28,000  stainless steal bronze on stone

This unique piece is available exclusively through Bonner David Galleries.

There is something magical about Kevin Box’s sculptures. Each one of them is an ode to imagination, to simplicity, to childhood fun. Viewers, however, experience much more than just a trip back in time. In his powerful steel sculpture entitled “Folding Planes,” Kevin Box brings us to the realm of memory, innocence, and fun. How do you make something as fragile as paper last forever? How do you make good memories last for always?
Most of us can relate to paper airplanes. We learned the craft of paper folding from our peers. We all went through a phase of initiation, intense production, and experimentation, before we, in turn, passed on the art to younger siblings, younger schoolmates, or even, for some of us, to our own children. Box emphasizes good memories, the ones we keep deep in our hearts.
Kevin Box’s work is the result of years of pioneering and perfecting the art of casting paper in stainless steel. Viewing himself as a 21st century artist, Box has chosen stainless steel as his medium of choice, not just for its durability, but also for how it relates to this brave new world. Paper is the central theme to Box’s work. The artist weaves together metaphors for the passing of time, the power of the imagination, and the magic of childhood.

July Featured Artist Michael Carson

July 2020 Featured Artist – Michael Carson
“Contemplative Moments”

Image of oil painting "Blue Flowers" by artist Michael Carson, on display at Bonner David Galleries in Scottsdale, Arizona and New York

Michael Carson has been called the “post-millennial Toulouse-Lautrec.” Like the turn of the century French master, Carson is a self-described people watcher. He paints figures with a soft, sophisticated touch. His works summon a pensive, ethereal feeling in the viewer. His subjects seem absorbed in a world of contemplation and inward thinking.

Working loosely and spontaneously, Michael Carson makes every brushstroke count. His use of color and light contributes to the overall meditative mood of his paintings, although he allows the viewer to interpret meaning using their own experience. These captured moments and this focus on atmosphere make Carson’s art both personal and universal and appeals to an increasing number of collectors in the United States and abroad.

Just in time for this spring season of renewal and hope, we’ve received eight stunning new paintings from Gail Morris for her “Elements of Earth” show scheduled for next week.  While circumstances do not permit our original artist reception, we’ve beautifully hung the pieces in our gallery space and they make such a statement. Until we can unveil the actual show, we want you to have a chance to view and collect these works, so we’ve created a virtual exhibit in a flipbook format. You can view Gail Morris’ virtual exhibit flipbook here.

We are still periodically at the gallery, so you can feel free to contact us there by email. We can arrange for a private social distance tour and take care of all the necessary details to ensure safe delivery to your home.  Gail has been working tirelessly for this show and we’re proud to bring it to you, even if in a little different format. Our hope is that you and your loved ones remain safe during these uncertain times and that we’ll soon welcome you back to our lovely gallery spaces, both in Scottsdale and New York.

In late spring, some friends and I went to a cabin in the woods in Prescott. We cooked, antique shopped, and of course, hiked. There are some wonderful trails in Prescott, along creeks, among the pinons and under the pine trees. It was on one of those hikes that we spied this beautiful mound of Echinocereus triglochidiatus glowing on a bank, nestled among the pine needles and boulders. It demanded a closer look.

While I was on this trip, I got the call that my dad was not doing so well. There was nothing I could do, and I was so far away. My friends listened to me, cried with me, prayed with me. And that’s what good friends do. They are like shining lights at the end of a dark tunnel. The beauty these cactus blooms will always remind me of their love and care.

Ellen: The Little Girl Who Found Her Voice

ellen-book-front-coverEllen Skidmore has always had trouble communicating. Her speech impediment prevented her from expressing herself, which lead to a lot of sadness for a long time. Ellen said, “All my life I have had great difficulty trying to understand the underlying nature of my existence. For a long time, I looked outside myself for connection, direction and validation. I searched and struggled with this until I could go on no more and felt my spirit was broken.”

In college, Skidmore started looking into art therapy and found a professor who really challenged her. She found that painting was the place where she was at peace. “Part of the painting process is to paint your pain and it somehow morphs into beauty,” Ellen explains, “I could paint something really sad and someone could say ‘oh my god, that just makes me so happy.'” Ellen found happiness in painting, and she really wanted to share that with people.

When thinking of how she could share her own story of accepting herself, she thought about creating a children’s book. “My own story came out in a flurry,” she remembers, “Making the book was a labor of love and it’s been very cathartic.”

Ellen wants her own story to inspire children to be more accepting of themselves. She said, “I’m just really hopeful that it will be inspiring to children, and girls especially, I want them to be captain of their own ship.” Writing her book, Ellen was able to reflect on how painting has changed her own view of herself.

Ellen is debuting a new show this week with an opening reception on Thursday, December 17th, from 6-9pm. We are so excited to see her book and her latest works on display at our gallery! You can learn more about Ellen and her remarkable story through this video.

Nefariousness: Michael Carson Solo Show

Michael Carson "Above" 20" x 16"

Michael Carson
“Above”
20″ x 16″

In “Nefariousness,” Michael Carson’s most recent show, the figures in each piece exude confidence and attitude as if they’re saying, quite blatantly, “we don’t care what you think of us.” Their self-assurance is magnetic; you find yourself staring at them, thinking about what their lives could be like. Carson draws his subjects from pictures that models send or pictures that he finds. Poise and intrigue are all-too-natural to them, and he loves using them as subjects in his work since they have just the right amount of attitude.

Carson pushed past his comfort zone in this show, adding facial expressions to a few pieces and balancing tension with a calm in others. While Carson is globally known for his cool, attractive figures, in this show he added a new depth to them by contrasting reds with his well-known muted palette. Carson’s newest works are more popular than ever. He was featured in Kate Spade’s Blog, Behind the Curtain, and Elusive Magazine, where they interviewed him.

The reception for Nefariousness took place on November 19th and was a huge hit. People were packed into the gallery, eager to take a look at these stunning paintings. The show will be hanging until December 8th. Make sure you stop by the gallery soon so that you’re able to purchase your favorite piece from this the startlingly attractive show for your own private collection!
